Differences between civil and criminal procedure Ever since the states were required to guarantee full access to the courts to those who do not speak English by applying Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to all services provided with federal funds, court interpreters faced the need to work in a field relatively new to many of them. This presentation will examine all stages of an ordinary civil procedure, comparing them to the stages of a criminal case. Interpreters will be exposed to civil law concepts and terminology widely used during some of the most common civil cases such as torts, family cases, and class-action lawsuits.
